failing zines

Khoi Vinh posted his speech to the graduating class at Otis a while ago, pretty much just saying fail early and often.

I am definitely failing often right now. I’ve been working on my project and in the process learning how to NOT do things in After Effects. Grr. I’m on a mini break.

I got a zine in the mail yesterday from a girl I use to do trades with when I was in highschool. I sent her one of my comics a few months back, but for the most part I haven’t really kept in touch or anything for the past 4 years. But It made me all nostalgic and wanting to start making them again. I guess the comics I’ve made kinda count. But they’re not the same. I’ve been meaning to the whole time I’ve been in college, but it looks like it’s not happening until at least the summer.

There is just something nice about producing little personal books that people can hold. Despite all this interaction and motion stuff, I still have a soft spot for the printed page. But I think the blog has taken most of my free words. And being in design has sort of taken over my needs to be visual and make things. And part of me feels like I’ve sort of “grown out” of it. Or maybe I’ve just been too busy making other things.

I wonder though, if I were to put out a zine now, what would it be like now that I’ve had a formal education in design? I wouldn’t want it to be a “designy” thing all set in indesign, but I know all those things that have been hammered into my head would have to have some effect.

My wrist is sore from mousing most of the weekend and I’m longing for some scissors and glue action.

Life is going to be crazy in the next 10 days. Sigh.

Quick Update: Gerbils & Such

hey
New photos up! (Gerbils vs. Alpacas & Tim Gunn.)

The Sidekick ID Demo we did at work is live. I think this version is only going to be up for a little while until we make a more intense one. My bits were small (all the spinning pink things, slideshow on the screen, and simplifying the vector people) but it’s just cool seeing something I helped on deployed in the real (online) world.

Okay. Time to get… everything done.

girls soda and running

I wish I could get more lush and gorgeous imagery on to paper. Or on the screen. I am having a hard time making my boards not look like crap. I am in semi panic mode, seeing as how it’s the end of the 7th week. I have less than 3 left! I am kind of freaking out. Most of my friends from highschool have already graduated. So weird.

And in the morning its girls
These are some girls I admire. I would like to start compiling a list/site of awesome girls in mograph, if only for my own personal inspiration..

Soda or Pop?
I had no idea St.Louis was like a little island of Soda people. I though everyone said soda, except for the occasional weird people. If you’ve ever wondered here’s a map: Generic Names for Soft Drinks

Trying again
Also, this is mostly a note for myself. I want to start running/jogging more often again, so I need a place to keep track. I’d like to be faster and able to go for longer. But really I’d just like to get back into it. It’s amazing how much of a (negative) difference it has made moving out further where most of my walking is too and from the bus stop. Living in the apartments I’d get at least 15-20 minutes of just walking, each way, every day by default.

I am so done with circles

I am trying to put together what will become my little 6×8 piece of wall for our BFA show. Looking at all my work next to each other at once I have made a few assessments:

1. I am apparently obsessed with round things. Round red pills, round nestle logo, round spa symbols, round tuna cans, and round piggy. But I’m onto cubes for my senior project.

2. I have a lot of things in a series. Information design spreads, interactive screenshots, & storyboards.

3. My color palette is BORING for the most part.

4. There seem to be two general types of designers. Illustrators and photographers. I have woefully little photography.

5. I need more lush and organic stuff.

6. This wall space is tiny.

Also, some other assessments of my life at the moment:

I am feeling awkward and want to go out for drinks this weekend. Any takers? I’ve never been a big drinker (read: drinking n00b) but I want out.
