End of 2007

Designers in my life throughout 2007

Oh 2007. What a year you’ve been for me. So much has changed and so much has happened in this past year, its crazy. Overall I think it’s been a pretty good one though. I feel like I’ve learned a whole lot in the past 12 months.

Top 3 fav artists of 2007
Nouvelle Vague (also top of last year!), The Knife, and Psapp. And below, songs by them for your year end enjoyment. Two from Nouvelle Vague (Killing Moon and Dance With Me) because they’re extra awesome. Heartbeats by The Knife and Hi by Psapp.

Processing Christmas

gerbil

Yay! Happy Holidays! Just a quick one to say the long weekend has been nice. X-mas Eve Angelo and I made a little cardboard x-mas tree with little cardboard ornaments (one of the above). X-mas morning presents and waffles! Lots of good stuff. X-mas evening we went to Angelo’s Friend’s house for a wheat-free, dairy-free, gluten-free, but still very tasty dinner. His friend is one of the lead guys who works on After Effects. I think it’s kinda weird that around this time last year I was just learning how to use it and a year later I’m having Christmas dinner with one of the people that make it.

My latest thing I’m trying to learn is Processing. I think I first sort of heard about it when I was interning at HA. A lot of the developers would sort of just say “oh yeah, that’d be easy with processing” when tossing ideas around. And I started to see some cool stuff people were doing with it. And at OFFF I saw A LOT of really interesting stuff people were making with it. Seems like it’s gotten pretty big especially this past year.

So I picked up Processing: A Programming Handbook for Visual Designers and Artists a while ago. I’m only on page 37 but it’s already pretty neat. I definitely have to say it’s a really good book. It’s interesting how much more interesting programing can be when it’s put into this different context. The book (and processing) really is geared towards the visually inclined which is great. Anyways, so far I’ve just learned basic things but here’s the first “toy” I’ve made on my own from some of those things. It’s pretty simple, but I thought it was kinda fun (Click to play with it):

Super Mega Post For Your Eyeballs Turbo 2

7 random things
So Rachel tagged me a while ago to do this 7 thing meme. I felt like writing/drawing it out so here it is.

“The rules:
Link to the person that tagged you and post the rules on your blog.
Share 7 random and/or weird things about yourself.
Tag 7 random people at the end of your post and include links to their blogs.
Let each person know that they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.”

7 random things

I don’t normally tag people for these things, but I feel like it tonight. So if you feel like it: Riley, Angelo, Zach, Matt, Mike

The Mindquest thing we made at work is now up for your viewing pleasure. Fun fact: I am both the Eye Of The Past and Segway Rider #3. I am pretty much famous now, obviously.

Big Word Bird
I finally started the animated words project I’ve been wanting to do for a while now. Here are the first two. They’re sort of just thrown together because the point of the project is really to get me experimenting and trying out a bunch of stuff, while hopefully teaching you some new words. I’m not sure whether or not I like having the definition in the video, but I’ll figure it out eventually. (update: higher quality vimeo versions below now)

Okay, that’s it for now I think. I was going to share some of the books I picked up recently too, but I think I’ll save that for another night. Maybe after I’ve had some time with them.

Where my girls at?

Looks like Emily (one of my close girlfriends and neighbors back in STL) just got engaged! And I’m actually really excited for her! It was weird though when I found out I was wanting to tell someone else about it but the only people online are Seattle people who have no idea who she is. And it occurred to me that I’ve lost most of the phone numbers of people back in STL and I’ve done a terrible job of keeping in touch with the girls back there. And it occurred to me that I don’t really have a “core” group of girls here. Probably because I’m terrible at doing the whole chatty girl talk thing. I dunno, I just feel kinda fragmented right now. I think I need to defrag.

Anyways, I hope Emily does this at her wedding:
